Promoting a Healthy Spring
Believe it or not, it's already the month of April! Now's the time to get moving as we transition seasons. Here are seven hints to help you "spring into wellness" and the activities of summer.
Wake early to exercise.
The mornings are warming up, and spring means the sun rises earlier each day. So take good advantage of this change. Get out and exercise before starting your day, whether it's going for a run or walking the dog. Exercising before work can begin your day on a high note with clarity and energy.
Update your workout attire.
Proper footwear can help support an active lifestyle by providing important support for your joints. In addition, new lightweight clothing can help you manage heat and perspiration to optimize comfort when exercising. And be sure you're properly equipped before starting a new workout routine.
Revitalize your daily fruits and vegetable.
Spring is a great season to add new fruits and vegetables to your diet. The U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends 4.5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day. These are among those that are in season during the spring: cherries, raspberries, nectarines, plums, pluots and rhubarb; artichokes, cucumbers, peas, peppers, squash, and tomatoes.
Say "yes" to a healthy breakfast.
It's a solid foundation and a great start for any day. And make sure to partner a morning exercise routine with a healthy breakfast. You'll need energy to make the most of your fitness regimen. Instead of coffee and a quick breakfast sandwich, how about a glass of OJ and a grapefruit?
Water with a squeeze of lemon.
How often do you drink the recommended 64 ounces of water each day? For your body to perform at a high level, it's essential to stay hydrated. A glass of water can also be a good appetite suppressant and can help maintain a healthy weight. Try a squeeze of lemon in your water to add a bit of zest.
Proper sleeping habits help maintain a healthy weight.
Strive to sleep 6-8 hours each night. Also, staying up late has been shown to increase the likelihood of overeating. Achieving proper rest will help reduce the opportunity to make bad diet decisions while preparing you for the demands of the next day.
Schedule screenings and doctor's appointments.
Spring is a good time for a health tune-up. For example, before starting an exercise routine, it's always recommended to check with your primary care physician. And are there any allergy medications that need to be refilled before heading outside? When the weather turns warm and the blossoms start coming out, it's our signal to get ahead of the game for making each summer fun and rewarding. Many of the activities above can be done with friends, family, and coworkers for mutual reinforcement. They can be integrated into corporate wellness programs. And it's not too early to start acquainting kids with some of these habits for a lifetime of healthy living.

March Champ Chain Winner: Alicia Pae
Please join us in congratulating our March Champ, the team member who went above and beyond to deliver on our mission of providing best resident life experience possible, and drive RENEWALS...Alicia Pae, our Leasing & Marketing Director at Live South Green in Athens Ohio!
"Alicia is such an important asset to our team and is always willing to go above and beyond to help our residents. She had a resident who had to leave school early due to medical reasons, and Alicia worked closely with him and his family to help guide them through the process of finding someone to take over his lease. They were so grateful for her support and patience, they mailed her a thank you card. Alicia is extremely adept at dealing with residents who require more personal attention. She resolves roommate disputes daily, and most recently, she helped a resident who was not getting along with his roommates resolve their problem and captured a new lease and 3 renewals in the process! Alicia knows all the residents at River Gate; she knows their names, where they live, their pet's names, their activities, and studies. We have residents who have renewed for 4+ years because of how she makes them feel. Understanding and caring, Alicia is a person you can go to for anything." - Team nomination by Ashley Gall, Nicole Richards, Christina Johnson, Chad Hudnall, Madison Bowers
There were so many examples in this nomination about the way Alicia supports her residents - and her guarantors! And by genuinely caring for people, she leases apartments and drives performance for her properties. What a shining example of "doing the right thing," and cultivating an amazing resident experience that is personalized to each resident. Thank you for your kindness, your patience, and leading by example!

February is American Heart Month: 10 Tips for a Healthy Heart
Many view February as the month of love, but it is also American Heart Month. Heart disease is the leading killer of Americans, taking the lives of 2,200 people each day. In addition, 103 million adults have high blood pressure and 6.5 million are living with heart failure. While genetic factors do play a part in cardiovascular disease, the good news is 80 percent of cardiovascular diseases may be preventable with education and action. Simple lifestyle changes can make a big impact when it comes to heart health. Show your heart some love with these 10 tips.
1. Stop smoking
Quitting smoking is the best thing that can be done for the heart and for overall health. Smoking is the most preventable cause of premature death in the United States, and smokers have a higher risk of developing many chronic disorders, including atherosclerosis, or the buildup of fatty substances in the arteries. When combined with other heart disease risk factors, smoking increases the risks associated with those factors. Quitting is never easy, but there are lots of helpful resources for those looking to start.
2. Know your numbers
Maintaining a healthy weight, blood pressure and total cholesterol play a significant role in maintaining a healthy heart. While there are standard guidelines for blood pressure and cholesterol, ideal weight goals are individual to each person. A physician can help determine an appropriate goal weight based on additional factors such as age and height.
3. Screen for diabetes
Untreated diabetes can lead to heart disease, among many other complications. Diabetes can be easily detected through a simple blood test and managed a variety of ways under the care of a physician.
4. Get active
Heart pumping physical activity not only helps to prevent cardiovascular disease but can also improve overall mental and physical health. The American Heart Association recommends five 30 minute moderate exercise sessions each week. While this may seem daunting, it is important to note that these sessions can be broken up into two or three 10 or 15-minute segments throughout the day. Walking, jogging, biking and swimming are all great forms of exercise. It is important to remember that something is always better than nothing. Opting to take the stairs and parking farther back in the parking lot are great ways to squeeze in activity when the time is short.
5. Build some muscle
Strength training compliments cardiovascular exercise by toning muscles and burning fat. In addition, proper strength training can improve daily functional movements, decreasing the chance of injury. The American Heart Association recommends getting in two days of moderate to high-intensity strength training each week.
6. Eat smart
A healthy diet full of heart-smart foods is essential to a healthy heart and lifestyle. Salmon, nuts, berries, and oats are just a few of the heart “superfoods” that may help reduce the risk of atherosclerosis. Dark chocolate is also on the list and is a great way to satisfy a sweet tooth (in moderation).
7. Limit junk
To reap the full benefits of a heart-healthy diet, it’s important to limit intake of nutrient-poor junk foods. Added sugars, saturated fat and excessive sodium can all negatively impact heart health, as well as overall physical health. These foods, when eaten in excess, can cause weight gain, raise blood pressure and clog arteries, which are all risk factors for heart disease.
8. Stress less
Stress increases cortisol, which leads to weight gain, a key risk factor for heart disease. In addition, stress can lead to other unhealthy habits, making it harder to stick to a heart-healthy program. Stress can also decrease overall happiness and increase the risk for anxiety and depression. Many of the items on this list can also help with reducing stress, in addition to practicing positive self-talk and incorporating mindfulness meditation breaks throughout the day.
9. Sleep more
Sleeping restores the body, helps decrease stress and increases overall happiness. To reap the full benefits, clocking seven hours each night is key. A calming bedtime routine and going to bed and waking at the same time each day are all great ways to establish healthy sleep patterns. Getting ample sunshine and physical activity throughout the day also aid in improving sleep quality.
10. Smile
A happy heart is a healthy heart. Making time for enjoyable activities and hobbies helps relieve stress and improves the overall mood, providing a great foundation for a heart-healthy lifestyle.
